Once your team has similarly made sense of the remaining important-to-know standard, you can combine the information to generate the unit essential learning standards and daily learning targets from your unwrapped standards (see figure 4.4, page 68). (See figure 2.5, page 22, for the template with directions.)
Your kindergarten team can put the information in the center column of figure 4.4 (page 68) into the first row of the Mathematics Unit Planner for the kindergarten addition and subtraction to 10 unit (see figure 4.11, page 79).
Sometimes teams group together state standards that closely align to form one student-friendly essential learning standard; however, grouping standards is not needed in this unit because each essential learning standard can be assessed separately with meaningful student reflection for each one. Additionally, there are only four essential learning standards in the unit, which falls within the targeted range of three to six standards per unit. The daily learning targets are from the concepts and skills portion of the unwrapping work and share the story of learning in the unit.
Both the essential learning standards and daily learning targets provide resources for your team as you plan your lessons and assessments. The next step for team unit planning is to add the dates for common assessments to the calendar and create the learning story arc with the daily learning targets.
